Frequently Asked Questions

Q

Hi, Was wondering exactly what the difference is between the Economy halter and your Signature halter. It looks identical other than this one is a brown leather instead of black. Is the quality of leather any different? Is the hardware any different? Thanks.

A

Hello!  Thank you so much for this really great question! I designed both these halters to be like the same halter. The difference is that the black one, the Signature halter, is all full-grain leather. The Economy halter (Brown), has all the same features and benefits as the Signature, i.e. fully padded, very adjustable, EXCEPT that it is not full-grain leather, hence the difference in price. Both halters have identical solid brass hardware.  The premise is that everyone deserves to have a halter that is fully padded and very adjustable tailored to your horse, marks of a La Vie Equestrienne halter but the Economy is one that is more affordable for most people. Now, that being said, many people will buy a Signature as their "Show" halter and have the Economy as a "turnout" halter that they don't mind getting battered around during turnout because we all know that horses can be rough with their various items. Personally, I always go higher quality even for turnout but everyone is different and I have provided options to allow people to do what they are most comfortable. I hope this answers your question and please let me know if you have anymore questions. Best Wishes, ~Sara

On Getting the Right Size: Size Matters

Make sure you have a sense of the size of your horses head before ordering a halter - you don't have to "know" per say that he or she is a mini/cob/full/oversize but you should have a sense of your horses features.  Is his head broad in the forehead? Does he have a narrow muzzle?  This is an important detail that not only make a visible difference but is a safety issue.  A well-fitting halter or any piece of tack is less likely to catch on things or get tangled - I believe that in life and especially with horses, it is always better to err on the side of caution.  When you buy a new horses' halter, if you can, bring along your old horses' halter that fits or even the one that you have that currently doesn't fit and think why.  We believe that a well-fitting piece of Equestrian tack will last longer and serve you and your horse better than an ill-fitting piece.  Feel free to e-mail or call us if you have any questions.  You may not know it, but though you have a horse - a cob size halter may fit his head the best or vice versa, the the former is usually the case.  Fine-boned horses like Thoroughbreds, Arabians and other breeds of horses with small or fine muzzles often fit into our cob size.  Remember, you can always exchange the size.  On a personal note, what prompted the basic adjustability design, the crown piece and chin strap of all our halters was my first experience  when purchasing a halter for my first off-track 16.1hh, Thoroughbred horse, "Melrose."  His body is of horse size but he has a slender head and muzzle with fine-boned features.  I thought he would be a horse size and without thinking, I bought that size.  When I got it home and proudly put his first nice halter on him, it was falling off his face!  I said, "I thought I had a horse but my horse is a cob!"  Well, silly as that experience was, he definitely is a horse but he just takes a cob size halter and guess what, there are so many horses out there just like him - and owners, like me, who have made that initial mistake.  I know now everything that makes a well-fitting piece of tack.  Just like people, there are so many shapes and sizes of horses out there and a "one-size-fits-all" premise rarely applies to the Equestrian world.  La Vie Equestrienne's cob and full sizes are very adjustable because we have designed these halters taking into account the "hard-to-fit" horse - and there are many out there.  Though we don't have oversize halters currently, our full size halter usually fits warmblood size horses or horses that are in between horse size and oversize.  If you have a true draft size horse, we do not yet have a halter that will fit your horse but please be patient, we are working on it!  Click here to view our halters page
